Spring beckons, and it’s the time of the year where we see flowers blooming in countries all around the world. For many, cherry blossoms viewing is a once-in-a-lifetime experience which is often associated ONLY to Japan (a misconception). Where else in the world can you catch them cherry blossoms? Visit the Jerte Valley in spring to catch the marvellous sight of the valley turning completely white with the blooms of 2 million cherry trees. This year, the annual celebration of the cherry blossom festival, known as Fiesta del Cerezo en Flor, will be held from 29 March to 6 April 2019. We recommend that you spend the night in Jerte Valley, and stay for a while to fully enjoy and experience the medievals markets, exhibitions, open-air celebrations, and other activities.

Bispebjerg Cemetery, Copenhagen

Located close to Grundtvigs Kirke, a church known for its stunning architecture, Bispebjerg Cemetery is a famous spot to catch the cherry blossoms in Copenhagen. When in full bloom, the avenue of cherry trees form a long pink tunnel, making it a spectacular sight and popular spot for photos.

Best time to visit: Early April to Late April

Tip: Head there early in the morning and/or on a weekday to escape the crowds.

Langelinie Park, Copenhagen

Langelinie is a pier, promenade and park in central Copenhagen, that holds the annual Copenhagen Sakura Festival. This cultural event features the Japanese culture and art forms, and will be held on 27th and 28th April 2019.

During that period, 200 cherry trees will be in full bloom and will offer a second chance to visitors who were unable to catch the earlier blooms at the Bispebjerg Cemetery earlier in the month.

For a more interesting way to enjoy the cherry blossoms, take a canal tour and also get to view other attractions such as the Little Mermaid.

Kungsträdgården or King’s Garden is Stockholm’s top spot for viewing cherry blossoms, with pink and white blossoms forming a canopy along the two boulevards during peak bloom. This year, Cherry Blossom Day was held on 28th April 2019 at the Royal Garden. If you want to be at the very heart of where the blossoming takes place, you might want to stay in the Kings Garden Hotel, a 1 minute walk away from the Garden itself.

Chiune Sugihara Sakura Park is named after a Japanese diplomat who helped save thousands of Jews to leave the country during World War II. 200 cherry blossom trees were planted in this park on 2 September 2001, to commemorate his 100th birthday. This is a well-known spot for picnics, so you might want to be 100% ready and grab a picnic mat before you set off!

The annual cherry blossom festival, Kirschblütenfest, has been held in Hamburg since the 1960s when 5,000 cherry trees were donated to Hamburg by the Japanese Consulate. Every May, the festival will feature cultural activities, culinary delights, as well as a spectacular display of fireworks.

Paris, France

Though the cherry blossoms in Paris might not be as extravagant as those in Japan or Korea, nevertheless they provide beautiful displays and adds an additional touch of romance to the world’s most romantic city.

United Kingdom

Edinburgh (Scotland)

The Meadows is a large public park in Edinburgh that also doubles as a sports facility, with tennis courts, croquet club, and recreational sport pitches. Every spring, the walkways in the park become a beautiful avenue of cherry blossoms every spring, making it a perfect place to take a stroll and snap a few shots.

Kew Gardens (London’s largest UNESCO World Heritage site) is a botanical garden in southwest London and has its very own Cherry Walk, where cherry trees line the pathway to the Temperate House.

Best time to visit: Late March to Early May

How to get there:

  1. Take the London tube (underground) to Kew Gardens station and enter through Victoria Gate (Postal Code: TW9 3JR). Near to Palm House, The Botanical, Marianne North and Shirley Sherwood galleries, Broad Walk Borders, and Victoria Plaza cafe and shop.
  2. Take the train to Kew Bridge Rail Station and enter through Elizabeth Gate (Postal Code: TW9 3AB). Near to Orangery restaurant, Princess of Wales Conservatory, Kew Palace and Royal Kitchens, and The Hive.
  3. Take the tube or train to Richmond Station, then transfer to Bus 65 (in the direction of Ealing Broadway) to Victoria Gate or Lion Gate (TW9 2DF). Near to Japanese Gateway.
  4. By bus, Route 65 stops close to Lion Gate, Victoria Gate and Elizabeth Gate.

Route 391 stops near Kew Gardens station and Elizabeth Gate.

Routes 237 and 267 stop at Kew Bridge station.
